| July 12, 2004 | 11:32 AM | Glass Industry Roadmap Update |
| Dear stakeholders, much of our R&D program has been driven by the glass industry vision and roadmap. These documents explored the common technological needs and interests of various glass manufacturers. Their content also became the driver for our competitive solicitations. These reports are available on the ITP Glass IOF website. If you would like to suggest needed refinements, additions, or revisions to any of the roadmap areas or topics, please post your comments below. Based to the number of responses, we may hold subsequent meetings towards revising the roadmap document. Please call me if you have any questions using this forum, 202-586-1476. Thank you very much, Elliott Levine. | ||

| 04 - Aug - 2004 | 3:04 PM | New Ideas for the Road Map |
| The Road Map was a fine document but it did not establish a priority list. Currently 3 programs have been funded by the Glass-ITP and some of those ideas came about as a result of further focus activties beyond the Road Map such as the workshop held in 2001 in Washington DC on Innovative Melting. Two of the funded programs , namely plasma melting and submerged combustion are new looks at high intensity melting. If both are successful they will still only cover a small part of the glass sectors , since it is anticipated that both melters will need new approaches for refining in order to produce the low seed glass needed in many product sectors. Some ideas on refining and conditioning have been brought forth as a result of two workshops held by the GMIC. I would hope we could see new proposals built around ideas put forth at those workshops as well as new ideas beyond what has been discussed in refining. The glass industry needs to take the lead in generating ideas and proposals that supplement work underway on high intensity melters , as well as existing melting processes, in order to deliver energy and capital savings in the refining section of the glass making processes. Another important area hinted at in the Road Map is the need to save energy and eliminate waste while improving productivity and value by reducing/eliminating formation of breakage and flaws , that either cause production upsets, or result in lost or bad product.Again this is an area where the Universities and Government labs might be able to offer new ideas on possible approaches that could lead to retaining the pristine nature of the glass surface and reducing/eliminating this lost energy. But again such proposals need industry leadership to ensure they have best value in eventual implementation. These two areas seem very worthy of more detailed proposals beyond what is in the Road Map. | ||
