Building Technology Fact Sheets
Windows R&D Fact Sheet
Residential and commercial buildings account for one third of the United States primary energy consumption and 15% of this energy, or about 5.7 Quads, is attributed to windows. Inefficient windows lead to higher heating, cooling and lighting loads for all buildings, costing building owners about $40 per year. Under the umbrella of the US Department of Energy Building Technologies Program, the two goals of the Emerging Technology Windows Program are to: 1) research and develop leapfrog technologies that will improve the efficiency of window systems in both new and existing buildings and 2) provide the guidance and tools that encourage their widespread manufacture and use.

Moisture R&D Fact Sheet
Moisture leaking into your building can lead to serious damage. Further, wet insulation has a lower R-value than dry insulation,so moisture problems will lower a building's energy effciency, needlessly increasing energy bills. Protecting your building from moisture penetration plays a key role in energy efficiency.

Building Envelope R&D Fact Sheet
The building envelope, which consists of windows, walls, roofs, foundations and a variety of other elements that protect conditioned space from the elements, consumes as much as 53% of the energy used by buildings. For over 25 years, DOE has collaborated with industry to fund important building envelope research.
